General
For optimal benefits, it is generally recommended to use a steam sauna 2 to 3 times a week, allowing your body time to recover between sessions. However, individuals may vary; some may enjoy more frequent sessions for relaxation and detoxification, while others may prefer less often. Always listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional if you have specific health concerns.
The best time to use a steam sauna is typically after a workout or physical activity, as it helps relax muscles and promotes recovery. Alternatively, you can also enjoy a steam sauna in the evening to unwind and relieve stress before bed. It's important to listen to your body and ensure you stay hydrated, regardless of when you choose to sauna.
After using a steam sauna, it’s essential to hydrate by drinking plenty of water to replenish fluids lost through sweating. Allow your body to cool down gradually; consider taking a cool shower or resting in a cooler environment. Stretching lightly can also enhance relaxation and alleviate muscle tension. Avoid any strenuous activities immediately afterward, and give yourself time to enjoy the aftereffects of your sauna session.
For optimal benefits, a sauna session typically lasts between 15 to 20 minutes. However, beginners should start with shorter sessions of about 5 to 10 minutes, gradually increasing the duration as they become more accustomed to the heat. It’s essential to stay hydrated and listen to your body, exiting the sauna if you start to feel dizzy or uncomfortable.
One of the health advantages of using a sauna is that the fluctuating temperatures can elevate your heart rate. It's important to consult with your physician or healthcare professional to ensure that using our saunas is suitable for you, especially if you or your family have a history of high blood pressure, heart disease, have experienced chest pain during exercise or in the past month while at rest, smoke, have high cholesterol, are overweight, or have any bone or joint issues that may worsen with sauna use. If you feel faint, dizzy, in pain, or short of breath while in the sauna, you should exit immediately, and refrain from using the sauna if under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Additionally, customers should keep a fire extinguisher accessible near the sauna and make sure that all combustible materials, like towels and papers, are away from the heater or stove.

Maintenance & Operation
To maintain your steam sauna, regularly clean the surfaces with a mild detergent and water to prevent mold and mildew buildup. Ensure the steam generator is functioning properly by checking for clogs and descaling as needed, typically every 6 months. Wipe down benches and walls after each use to reduce moisture accumulation, and ventilate the sauna when not in use to promote drying. Additionally, inspect seals and hinges for wear and replace them to keep the sauna in optimal condition.
#1: Give your sauna a gentle scrub after each session. The easiest way to maintain your sauna is to keep a hand brush inside. The last person to exit dips the brush in plain water and quickly scrubs the benches, walls, backrests, etc. This brief 30 to 60 second routine will help preserve your sauna's appearance for years.
#2: Ensure the sauna dries out. After your sauna session and cleaning, elevate the duckboards off the floor and leave the door open to fully air it out. The residual heat from the rocks and wood should thoroughly dry the sauna.
#3: Tackle dirt and stains promptly. If dirt or sweat stains appear, use a hand brush with warm water mixed with mild detergent. To restore the benches to their original look, lightly sand them once a year. For any mold growth, such as on duckboards, clean with warm water and bleach.
#4: Occasionally wet-mop the floors. Depending on your sauna's usage frequency, periodically wet-mop with a liquid deodorizing cleaner like Lysol or Pine-Sol.
If you use a sauna frequently, it's advisable to clean it at least once a week. While maintaining a sauna may seem complicated, it actually involves a straightforward process of specific steps to guarantee thorough cleanliness.
Ultimately, it depends on customer preference. Cedar contains natural resin that helps prevent rot, making sealing the sauna unnecessary. However, UV exposure and weather can dull the wood's color. To maintain the vibrant hue of your western red cedar, we suggest sealing both the interior and exterior of the sauna. Alternatively, you can buy a sealant yourself; just make sure that any sealant you apply indoors is non-toxic and safe for high temperatures.
After your sauna is built and ready to go, there are important steps to follow before enjoying your first session. Curing the sauna involves thoroughly cleaning it, running the heater, and allowing the heat to properly condition the wood. Start by clearing out any remaining construction debris, vacuuming the floor, benches, and walls, and wiping down all wooden surfaces with a damp cloth and warm water. Clean the sauna rocks before placing them in the heater. When arranging the rocks, remember to avoid packing them too tightly in the basket to ensure proper air circulation, which prevents overheating and tripping the high-limit switch; if this happens, cool the heater down and reset the switch using a pencil. Additionally, remove any plastic covering from the stainless steel heater shell if not done already. Once all electrical connections are secure, operate the heater for about twenty minutes to burn off the manufacturer's coating, producing some smoke and odor, which is normal. Finally, keep the sauna running at full temperature for one hour with the door closed before first use. During the initial heat-up, rocks may crack, and after about forty-five minutes, add approximately a quart of water slowly to the rocks for steam cleaning; if water pools on the floor, you’re pouring too quickly.
